Title: Transportation update — 2026-06-04

Opener: As the dust settles on another week in transportation, it's time for a quick rundown of where things stand. Here are three big stories from the past seven days that you need to know about.

Body: 1\. The great EV race heats up

Tesla may be the name on everyone's lips, but it's not the only player in the electric vehicle game. This week saw a flurry of announcements from rivals Rivian and Lucid, both of which are hot on Elon Musk's heels. Rivian revealed plans for an Amazon-branded delivery van that will run entirely on EV tech, while Lucid unveiled its own luxury sedan, set to rival the Tesla Model S. With traditional car giants like Ford and GM also ramping up their electric efforts, it seems the race is very much on. 2\. Self-driving cars hit a bump in the road

The self-driving car dream has hit something of a speed bump this week. Uber announced it was selling its autonomous vehicle division to Aurora Innovation for a song ($5bn, down from a $7.8bn valuation in 2019), while Waymo, Google's self-driving car spin-off, revealed it had been involved in three accidents involving its self-driving cars this year. While these setbacks are far from fatal, they do suggest that the road to full autonomy might be a bit longer and bumpier than some had hoped. 3\. Public transport goes electric

It's not just private vehicles that are going electric; public transport is getting in on the act too. This week saw London's iconic red buses go hybrid, while New York announced plans to electrify its entire fleet of yellow cabs by 2030. Meanwhile, China unveiled plans for a nationwide network of high-speed electric train lines, set to become the world's largest EV infrastructure project. If you thought electric cars were big news, wait until you see what happens when they start powering buses, trains and taxis too...
